Introduction

Vrbo is a vacation rental marketplace, part of Expedia Group, where homeowners list their properties for travellers looking for whole-home short-term stays.

The "Rate Automation" initiative was driven by a competitive market movement, as platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com heavily invested in dynamic pricing tools, while staying true to what Vrbo hosts value most: control and transparency over their own pricing.
From our research, we know that our partners prioritize revenue optimization over occupancy metrics when managing their properties. Yet many of them lack the time or expertise to manually adjust rates in a competitive market. Rate Automation is a platform-specific tool within Market Maker that directly addresses this gap, enabling property owners to automate their pricing strategy while keeping full control over it.

Role

I was the sole Designer on the end-to-end Rate Automation experience, alongside a talented team of Revenue Managers, Market Makers, PM, PMM, UX Writing, Legal, and Business Operations.

Outcome

We launched the first iteration of Rate Automation in 2024, starting with a targeted rollout across a specific segment of properties in the US market. This phased approach allowed us to validate the experience with real partners before scaling to a broader audience.
